Windrush Celebrations

The Windrush Story by Trish Cooke for Black History Month, October 2020

Imagine what it must have felt like coming from the Caribbean to live in England in 1948.

Our Windrush education package features a twenty minute specially commissioned docudrama, following the journey of our fictional character, Winnie Johnson who accepted the invitation from the British Government, to help get Britain back on its feet again after World War II.  Suitable for years 3 and 4.

Also included are teacher’s development notes to help schools get the most out of this topic and enable pupils to discuss and develop their ideas. Our aim is to encourage higher level thinking, empathy and historical perspective as well as providing an impetus for writing with purpose.

To help with this we have added four “video provocations” which can be used on smartboards. These feature characters from Trish’s docudrama who will address the class with problems to be solved and questions to be answered, giving the children the “mantle of the expert”.

As a bonus, each education pack will contain a signed copy of Trish Cooke’s best-selling book, Mammy Sugar Falling Down, about a young girl who travels to England from the Caribbean for the first time – as well as some questions for young readers.
